Confucius Scholarships as one of the China scholarships, are set up by Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban (hereinafter referred to as Hanban) in order to promote the development of Chinese language, Chinese culture, and Chinese teachers and learners as well as Confucius Institutes. Confucius Scholarships holders will go on their study in host universities.

Generally, there are 2 types of Confucius Scholarships. The first one is the commonly-known Confucius Institute Scholarship which includes Scholarship for Students of Master's Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(MTCSOL), Scholarship for Students of One-Academic-Year + MTCSOL, Scholarship for Students of One-Academic-Year + MTCSOL, Scholarship for Students of Bachelor's Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(BTCSOL), Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Students, Scholarship for One-Semester Students and Scholarship for Four-week Students.

Eligibility Criteria of Confucius Institute Scholarship:

Applicants of this kind of Confucius Scholarship shall be aged between 16 and 35, while Chinese language teachers in post shall be below 45 and BTCSOL students shall be below 20.
To be more specific:

The Confucius Scholarship for Students of MTCSOL The applicants shall have a score of at least 180 on the HSK (level 5) and a score of at least 50 on the HSKK (intermediate level), together with a written commitment guaranteeing their 5-year Chinese language teaching after graduation.
The Confucius Scholarship for Students of One-Academic-Year + MTCSOL The applicants shall have a score of at least 180 on the HSK (level 3) and a score of at least 60 on the HSKK (primary level).
The Confucius Scholarship for Students of BTCSOL The applicants shall have a score of no less than 180 scores in HSK (level 3) and at least 40 scores in HSKK (intermediate level).
The Confucius Scholarship for One-Academic Year Students The applicants shall have a score of at least 180 on the HSK (level 3) and at least 60 on the HSKK (primary level).
The Confucius Scholarship for One-Semester Students The applicants shall have a score of at least 120 on the HSK (level 2) and at least 40 on the HSKK (primary level).
The Confucius Scholarship of Four-week Students The applicants shall have completed their study at a Confucius Institute for more than 30 hours, participated in the new Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) and have no previous learning experience in China.

 

Values/Coverage of Confucius Institute Scholarship:

Winners of Confucius Institute Scholarship can have a waiver of registration fees, tuition, fees for basic learning materials, accommodation fees on campus, a one-off resettlement subsidy, monthly living allowance, outpatient medical service and comprehensive insurance for foreign students studying in China.

Recruitment Process of Confucius Institute Scholarship:

Applicants of this China scholarship need to log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarship website between February to May to complete and submit the application form online or just ask CUCAS to apply for them. Then the recommending institutions will examine the eligibility of applicants of this Confucius Institute Scholarship.  The final list of the winners of this Confucius Institute Scholarship will be published on the website by June 16th and then scholarship related documents will be sent to winners by July 1st.
Note: It is worth mentioning that winners of the Confucius Institute Scholarship may be subject to an annual evaluation in order to enjoy the Confucius Institute Scholarship in the following year.

The second category is the Confucius China Studies Program which includes 6 subprograms of Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship, Ph. D. in China Fellowship, “Understanding China” Fellowship, Young Leaders Fellowship, International Conference Grant and Publication Grant in the field of Humanities and Social Science.

Eligibility Criteria of Confucius China Studies Program:

To be more specific:

The Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship It is set up to support Doctoral candidates in foreign universities to come to study in China. Applicants of this Confucius Scholarship should have a HSK test score of level 3.
The Ph.D. in China Fellowship It is provided to full-time Ph.D. degree students in Chinese universities. Applicants of this Confucius Scholarship shall have a HSK test score of level 5.
The “Understanding China” Fellowship It consists of “Understanding China” Visiting Scholar to China, “Understanding China” Short-term visit and “Understanding China” Chinese Visiting Scholar. Each of them serves to support different roles to undertake research in China.
The Young Leaders Fellowship It is awarded to applicants aged under 40.
The Publication Grant It supports foreign scholars to publish academic journals and do relevant academic China Studies.
The International Conference Grant It aims at supporting international academic conferences on China Studies.

 

Values/Coverage of Confucius China Studies Program:

The Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship and the “Understanding China” Fellowship
  1. Lodging and living stipend: 80,000 RMB per year
  2. Research fund: 20,000 RMB per year
  3. Round-trip international airfare
  4. Tuition;
  5. Other support provided by the host Chinese university
  6. Expenses for the foreign supervisor’s visit or research in China (only for the Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship)

“Understanding China” Visiting Scholar to China of the “Understanding China” Fellowship
  1. 10000 RMB per month;
  2. Round-trip international airfare (economy class, to be reimbursed against actual cost);

“Understanding China” Short-term visit of the “Understanding China” Fellowship
  1. Accommodation and travel expenses in China;
  2. Round-trip international airfare (economy class, to be reimbursed against actual cost);
  3. Expenses for life and medical insurances in China.
“Understanding China” Chinese Visiting Scholar of the “Understanding China” Fellowship
  1. Scholars will be paid according to the standard of Government-sponsored teachers;
  2. Extra research grant will be given to the scholar when needed.
The Young Leaders Fellowship of the Confucius Scholarship
  1. Accommodation and travel expenses in China;
  2. Round-trip international airfare (economy class, to be reimbursed against actual cost);
  3. Expenses for life and medical insurances in China.
The Publication Grant of the Confucius Scholarship

It covers expenses for editing, translation, publication, circulation and advertising. The exact expenses will be approved according to the application.

The International Conference Grant of the Confucius Scholarship
  1. The accommodation and travel expenses of conference speakers;
  2. Registration fees;
  3. Publication fees of conference proceedings.

 

Recruitment Process of Confucius China Studies Program:

Applicants of the Confucius Scholarships shall apply online first and post related documents to the Confucius Institute Headquarters or just ask CUCAS to apply for them. Then the Confucius China Studies Program Expert Committee will assess the eligibility of the applicants.
