Besides learning by yourself,there are four main options for foreign students to study Chinese.
Generally speaking, the universities in China are the idealest place where you can get the Chinese lessons with the best quality. The reason is very simple: most universities have a teacher team with more experience on teaching Chinese than any private school.The better the university is, the most experienced teachers prefer to work there.Professors at universities are also the people who wrote most of Chinese textbooks for foreigners.This is the biggest advantage of signing up for a university.Besides,another good point of studying at a university is you won’t have to worried about the VISA and a cheap but comfortable accommodation at the foreign student's dormitory.Most universities named a building as international student apartment in which they provide big rooms( a private room with bathroom) and goods for daily need.
But every coin has two sides.There are also some disadvantages about studying at a university.
Comparing to the flexibility of private Mandarin school,there is little flexibility at university.You can't start a course at the University whenever you want and the time schedule of the lessons is fixed ,you can't even negotiate it.Universitiesonly offer full-time courses, with a minimum of compulsory lessons four hours per day, Monday to Friday.That means you won't be able to study at the university if you have a full-time job.Speaking of price,the best universities are more expensive than private schools.In fact,universities are a best place for Chinese beginners.Because the teaching methods of Universities work on the long terms.The courses are so boring during the first months and you'll perceive little to no progresses as they'll focus on characters and phonetics.Some universities provide English medium courses while some don’t.As we told before, universities have the most experienced teachers but also a bunch of awful teachers that were able to get a position.So it's probably that you end up with a master student teaching to you,they need working experience and they even pay for it. This may has a pro and con: the lesson may be quite interesting because master Chinese students are extremely motivated. However they have no teaching experience.
